Shea Moisture: Coconut and Hibiscus Curl and Style Milk

Today’s review is on the Shea Moisture Coconut and Hibiscus Style Milk. I have used products in the Shea Butter line before and have had a very good experience with them so far. So I was very optimistic when I bought the style milk and couldn’t wait to use it once I got home.

The Look

The “style milk” comes in an 8 oz bottle that is easy to store and take on trips. It is very easy to use and since it comes in a bottle and not a round container, like other products in the line, it is mess free. This is fantastic because you can then have more control over the amount of product you use.

Ingredients

The ingredients I am going to list are the most important ones found in the product. They are listed in the same order they are found on the label. As always, ingredients listed on labels are placed from those most found in the product to those least found in it.

1- Shea Butter: I am in love with Shea butter and have recently started using it in its raw form on my elbows, skin and hair. The constant use of Shea butter has many benefits, from fading scars and preventing wrinkles, to eliminating scalp irritation and restoring hair luster. I will post an article on the benefits and uses of Shea butter later on. For now, all you need to know is that it is amazing and that the Shea butter used in this particular product is organic.

2- Coconut Oil: You have all probably heard about how great coconut oil is for the hair and scalp. I personally apply it on my hair every other day in order to maintain shine and promote healthy hair growth. You can also use it as a treatment for dry scalp, skin moisturizer, to treat and prevent dandruff, and as a cooking oil. It is always best to buy organic coconut oil in order to receive the best results.

3- Silk Protein:  This is a natural protein that helps the hair and skin stay soft and moisturized. It is used in many shampoos, conditioners, lotions, bath gels, shaving creams and soaps in order to keep the hair and skin smooth. There is a small description of silk protein on the label that says: “silk protein reduces breakage, strengthens hair, adds smoothness and silkiness”. These are obviously things we all want for our curls.

4- Neem Oil:  This oil comes from the Neem tree in India. The oil has been used for many years to treat skin diseases and maintain healthy, shiny hair. It is known to strengthen hair, help cure dandruff, remove head lice and treat problems with the skin such as psoriasis.

**Other ingredients that I found less of but are important to mention are:

- Sage
- Carrot
- Honeysuckle
- Vitamin E
( To read the post on the benefits on vitamin E visit http://ricitosdecanela.blogspot.com/search?q=vitamin+e )

My Experience

    Smell and Texture:

The product has a very sweet but not overpowering coconut smell. It is very creamy, but I was surprised to see that it was not as thick as other leave-in conditioners I have used in the past. However, this did not discourage me, on the contrary I found it to be a positive aspect of the product. When using it my hair felt moisturized without feeling heavy or sticky.

    Results:

I used the product in various ways, the first time I tried it was directly after I had washed my hair. As a leave-in it is fantastic! My curls felt smooth, soft, conditioned, looked fantastic and the scent lasted a long time. However, when I tried to use it as a styling product it was less effective.

I made bantu knots in my hair and left them on overnight, using only this product as the styling agent. Although the hair ended up feeling soft and luscious, the style did not hold. Therefore, I ended up only using it as a leave-in conditioner and a curl reviving product. I did this by combining water and a bit of the hair milk in a spray bottle, and I sprayed it on my hair every morning to give it a bit of a lift.

Final Verdict

As a leave-in and daily moisturizer this product is, as of right now, my favorite. It is light, smooth, and gives my hair a fantastic look and feel. As a styling product, I am still on the fence. It has no hold which means that styles such as bantu knots and twist-outs may not come out as expected.

Rating

As a leave-in: 5 stars

As a styling product: 3 stars

Skinfood Royal Honey Eye Cream

Here is the product Review for the Skinfood Royal Honey Eye Cream
I really like this product and I hope my review helps clear up any doubts you might have about it!

Yes to Tomatoes: Blemish Clearing Facial Towelettes

Every time I took a “small” trip to Walgreens I would always see products from the Yes To . . . line. I would see shampoo’s, conditioners, moisturizers and toners and thought to myself: “Hmm, those seem nice. I should try them out one day”. However I never bought any of the products, until about a month ago. I was having some problems with my acne so I decided to buy the Yes to Tomatoes Blemish Clearing Facial Towelettes.

These wipes are made to treat acne and are conveniently packaged so you can use them while on the road. The Product contains Salicylic Acid and tomato extract to give you smooth glowing acne-free skin. It also contains witch hazel and watermelon to give your skin a refreshing feel and chock-full of vitamins to give you beautiful, healthy skin.
The Look

I found that the packaging was very convenient and more effective than any other wipe I have bought in the past. The opening used to remove wipes has a clasp that closes securely so that no bacteria can go into the container. It is also small enough to fit in your purse or backpack when going out. It brings 25 wipes for seven dollars, making it both convenient and cost-effective. All wipes are biodegradable and have a very refreshing yet subtle clean scent.

My experience

The first time I used the product it felt very refreshing and made my face feel very clean. It didn’t feel too dry and helped remove any extra residue my makeup may have left behind, therefore I felt it was doing it’s job. I used it once a day during that first week and got very good results. However, once I entered the second week, I noticed my skin started reacting differently, I was now getting more blemishes! I hadn’t changed anything else in my daily routine so I assumed it was caused by the wipes. Just to make sure that the wipes were causing this effect on my skin, I decided to stop using them for a few days and then try them again. After a few days without the wipes, my skin cleared up. However, once I started using the wipes again, the blemishes returned!

I couldn’t understand why this was happening, since I was getting such great results the first week. If anyone has and idea of why this could have happened please let me know.

Final Verdict

I would not give this product a completely negative review since it did do what was promised. The problem was that the results did not last very long. I don’t know if anyone else has had this problem with the product but I just think it’s not for me. However, I encourage you to try it out and see if you have better luck. It might just work great on your skin!

I have also been searching for the perfect camera (my technological soulmate!) so that I can deliver videos of awesome quality and can film outside of my home, thus giving you guys more interesting things to watch!

So yeah, it's been a bit of hard work but I am really excited to see how it all turns out ! I'll be posting videos again a week from now. See you guys then!

Origins: Brighter By Nature SPF35 Skin Tone Correcting Serum

I love this moisturizer! I have never used a moisturizer that leaves my skin feeling  smooth without any heaviness or oily residue. It has also helped clear up my acne scars around the cheeks and forehead which is fantastic!

The first thing I noticed about the product was its fragrance. It is a very light, clean, smell, not overwhelming like some perfumes.  I apply about 4 dots (one on my forehead, on each cheek and my chin) and it is enough to cover my face. I love the fact that it leaves my skin feeling moisturized without being oily. Now, I know this lotion is meant to be used during the day. However, I loved it so much, I have been using it at night as well.

*The line also offers a night-time lotion which I intend to purchase in the future*

[Picture of the night-time moisturizer]

Now, back to the review. I honestly thought I would run out a lot sooner! Three and a half moths of use and I still have about half the container left!

All in all, I think these products are amazing, super effective and have given me fantastic results. I encourage you to try them out for yourselves and see what I mean.
I am going back soon to by other products in the line, and will most definitely buy these two once they run out.

Origins: Checks and Balances Frothy Face Wash

The first product I decided to try was the Checks and Balances Frothy Face Wash. As soon as I got home I couldn’t wait to wash my face! This product is very light and leaves your face feeling fresh and clean without drying it. Also, you only need to use a bit of the product. I use a pea-sized amount and it is enough to cleanse my whole face.

I loved how it felt on my skin when I tried it at the store, however, before making a review I wanted to use it for a while. I wanted make sure its fabulous cleansing effect lasted more than two weeks. After three and a half months of using it, I am still in love! No product has ever lasted me so long and consistently given me such great results.

Also, you get a lot of product for the price. I bought the 5 oz (150 ml) bottle which might seem a little steep, but I have used just a bit twice a day for three and a half months, and I still have a lot left. You can also buy the 1.7 oz (50 ml) bottle for $11.00 if you want to try it out.

*If you want to know more about the company itself you can read my post http://ricitosdecanela.blogspot.com/2012/08/origins-about-brand.html or go to http://www.Origins.com  *

Origins: About The Brand

Origins products are made with organic essential oils and without any harmful ingredients like parabens, propylene glycol, mineral oil, DEA or animal ingredents. On the company’s site you can find information on how the company got started, the ingredients they use in their products and how they help the enviroment. One thing I found interesting while looking for information on the company was that the two trees on their logo actually represent the differing ideas they stand for. They try to combine the power of nature and the proof of science, and in my opinion, they succeed!

“A respect for the past blended with a vision for the future.”
- origins.com

I have been using a face wash and moisturizer from this product line for 3 and a half months and i must say that I am very impressed! I have combination skin which is mostly oily around the chin, nose and forehead. This means that I also get a lot of acne in these specific areas.

However, every single product I tried in the past either over-dried my skin, left it feeling like butter, or only worked for a short period of time (then, my skin would just go back to the way it was).

                                                         How I “discovered” Origins

I first found out about Origins while walking through Macy’s. I had never seen or heard about this brand before so I let my curiosity lead the way. The sales representative showed me the different products that were available. She also recommended some that worked for my specific skin type and would help with my acne. Then, after the consultation, I got a free facial! YAY!

The woman used the products she had recommended, which was great because I was able to test the products out before purchasing them. I was so impressed with how my skin felt that I decided to buy some of the products. (Reviews will be up very shortly)

I recommend that if you have an origins store or booth nearby, that you definitely check them out. You won’t regret it!

What is Wheat Germ?

Wheat germ is produced by milling whole wheat kernels. In the process, the three elements of the grain are separated, the endosperm, the bran and the germ. Each of these parts can be either kept in the flour to produce whole wheat flour, or separated and sold individually.

Wheat germ provides many important nutrients and minerals like iron, zinc folic acid, healthy unsaturated fats, protein, minerals and vitamins C, E and K. As a vegetarian myself I use this in many of my meals. Since I don’t eat meat I have cut back on saturated fat but there are a few nutrients that I miss out on. In this article I’ll explain some of the benefits and uses wheat germ has.

Storage

Because it contains unsaturated fat wheat germ tends to go bad easily. (It should smell sort-of like nuts, if it doesn’t, start to worry.) The whole jar can last you up to a year as long as you keep it refrigerated.

How to use it

The cool thing about wheat germ is that you can incorporate it into any dish and most times you won’t even taste it. You can put some wheat germ in pancake batter, waffles, cookies, sprinkle it over your spaghetti and even add some into your milkshake. Personally I use wheat germ in my morning smoothies, it fills me up and gives me a little boost. Or you can make a simple wheat germ tea and gain all the benefits in a more concentrated form.

Wheat Germ can also be used for face masks, here’s one recipe I like to use every once in a while:

Wheat Germ Face Mask Recipe

Ingredients:

- 2 tbsp Honey
- 2 tbsp Wheatgerm

Just take a bowl and mix together your honey and wheatgerm. Store this mixture in a container where it can last you up to a week.

Application:

-Wash your face with warm water
-Apply the mixture to your face
** (you can warm it up in your hands before application so it goes on smoother)**
-Leave the mask on for 15 to 20 minutes
-Rinse with hot water
-Apply toner and moisturizer

Product Review: Curls Unleashed Second Chance Curl Refresher

Ok, so I have been using this product for about a month now and have gotten very familiar with it. When you squeeze some out of the bottle it almost looks like a gel, but the consistency is less sticky. The product is marketed as a “curl refresher” and it certainly lives up to that name.

Pros:
The product does not create buildup and it doesn’t feel heavy on your hair. It smells like gumdrops and as a styling product I think it is very, very good. If you want to refresh twist-outs or give your second day hair some life then this product is just for you. (Honestly my curls hold their shape for a lot longer after using this product)

Another benefit is that you get a lot of product for an affordable price. I really only use about a tablespoon of the product a week and it does the job.

Cons:

Now, although it says it is also a moisturizing product, I didn’t feel any particular moisturizing activity going on. I still had to apply my leave-in conditioner beforehand to avoid having my hair look dry.
Also, you need to dampen your hair before applying the product, so it might not be as efficient for a quick dry-hair styling product as maybe a pomade or styling cream.

**It does contain Glycerin, but I did not want to necessarily add this as a con since it is a quick solution for dry hair. With this you'll get the shine you need all day.**

How to use:

Personally I found that the best way to use it was as the last step in my hair regime. After washing my hair I apply a leave-in conditioner and then a dollop of the curl refresher. The reason I use the leave-in first is because, as I mentioned before, when I used the product by itself it left my hair feeling dry. Then I either let it air dry or use a diffuser.

**One cool thing about this product is that even if you don’t use a diffuser your hair won’t look flat.**

Final verdict:

I will have to give this product a B+. It is not my favorite styling product but it does what it says and gives you excellent results.

Here's a picture of my hair after using the product:

The Book that Changed My Life: Osho

My mother has always been a great source of emotional support in my life. I admire her strength very much and how she has been able to guide and mold me into the person I am today. However, there are moments of introspection where you realize that other people’s words alone cannot help. You have to find your own path in life and somehow use the tools you were given to make sense of it all. There was a time not too long ago when I felt unmotivated. I was not sure of where I was going or what I was doing with my life. Was I lost? To a certain extent yes. Maybe not physically but when it came to what I felt was my purpose, that was definitely a mystery. I didn’t know where I was going. There were moment’s where I thought I did but it never seemed right. There was always something that felt forced, like I was making myself enjoy what I was doing. But once you’re three years into a bachelor’s degree it’s kind of scary to start all over again.

Somehow following my heart seemed like a mistake. At least that’s what most people kept telling me. “Why would you change now you only have one year left.” “But all the classes you’ve taken, they would have been a waste of time.” “You won’t get any money off of that, finish what you’re studying, that way your future is secure.” These are the things people kept saying to scare me into doing what they think is right. But the truth is, I don’t care how long it takes me to finish my degree, or how much more profitable other degrees are. As long as I am studying something that I like, that I feel enriches me as a person, lets me grow and discover the world in a way I enjoy, then who cares about time. To me it’s more about quality than quantity. And that applies to money, time, and friends. Money is not the goal, it  can never be the goal. The fact is that I have finally decided to do something for myself. I have chosen a path and am now going to work twice as hard to achieve what I want, and I will prove to all the non-believers, the “trash talkers” the negative people that I have allowed to steer my life, that I am in control. I am doing what I want to do, I am succeeding, and I am happy.

Now, to the purpose of this paper. Explaining how I reached these conclusions, in what moment I reached my epiphany and who helped me during this journey. Well of course support from your closest friends and family members is important but, as I said before, it is not the only thing you need. Reflection and meditation are also key elements of personal growth.  First I will start by explaining the where and how.

One day, about four months ago, I was feeling very down about my whole academic situation. Studying something I really am  not passionate about got me into a very unmotivated and somewhat depressive state. So I decided to go over to a friends house to talk, watch television and hang out. While in her room I noticed that a pile of books she always has in a corner had toppled over. She was in the bathroom so I started to pick them up and organize them a bit. While doing this one of the books caught my attention. It was titled Intimacy: Trusting Oneself and the Other by Osho. Even though the title immediately let me know it was a self-help book, there was something about it that seemed different. I read the back, two first pages and then put it back down. Once I got home I became curious about the author, so I did a little research. I discovered that he had a series of books all targeted to different areas. Some that focused on relationships, others for business men and women and then there were the ones I bought. Maturity: the responsibility of being Oneself, Creativity: Unleashing the forces within, and finally the first one I read, Courage: The Joy Of Living Dangerously.
I started with this book because I had noticed a pattern in my life, one of fear and hesitation that I wanted to break. Fear always held me back; fear of failure, disappointment, even fear of fear itself. While reading these books I realized that I am my biggest obstacle. Fear is the only thing that has kept me from living my life. The only thing between me and success, me and my goals, and ultimately, me and my happiness. I realized that it is good to be cautious, but not to the point where you stop enjoying all that life has to offer.

The Author:
Osho, who was also known throughout his life as Chandra Mohan Jain, Acharya Rajneesh and Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh, was born December 11th 1931. He received a masters degree in philosophy form the University of Saugar and later taught philosophy at the university of Jabalpur for nine years. In 1966 he left his profession as a teacher and put all his time into teaching and guiding sannyasins or “disciples” while pursuing a career as a type of motivational speaker. Throughout his life he acted as a spiritual teacher, guide and friend. In 1974 he moved from Bombay to Pune (South of India)  to establish a place of teaching called “ashram”.   In his teachings he would combine aspects of Hinduism, Jainism, Zen Buddhism, Taoism, Christianity, ancient Greek Philosophy, as well as many other religious and philosophic traditions.
In 1980 he was attacked by a Hindu fundamentalist during one of his morning speeches and had to be treated immediately.  This, although a very difficult incident, did not steer him away from his goals. In 1981 Osho left India and went to the United States to receive treatment for certain health problems he had developed later on . There has been a lot of controversy behind Osho’s teachings, mainly because of many personal problems he had to face. His marital, financial and religious matters have clearly upset many and distorted his image in the past. But one thing is certain, his teachings have had a positive impact on many who have read his books and I have personally benefited from the teachings he has left behind. As I learned in one of my courses last semester: “ Just because the police officer does not wear his seatbelt does not mean you shouldn’t wear it.”  What I mean by this is that even tough he had a somewhat tumultuous personal life we shouldn’t say that there is nothing to gain from his work.

Some of Osho’s beliefs that really impacted me are:

1. National, religious, gender and racial divisions are destructive.
2. Change as well as happiness both come from within.
3. Life is a constant university provided by the universe.
4. Theories can be borrowed but experiences cannot. This means that no one can live your life for you, only you can see, smell, feel, enjoy the world and all it has to offer.
5. If you are constantly in fear of the world, then how can you expect yourself to enjoy it?
6. You can not live in the future or in the past all you have is the now, so you should enjoy it.

This last point is one that has truly changed the way I view life and has helped me overcome many obstacles. I fully understand that your experiences in the past form who you are today but through his teachings I have slowly learned to live in the moment and not have as much fear of the uncertainty the future holds or hold on to the past so tightly that you can’t move forward. As he wrote in one of his books: “Do not make tomorrow predictable. Expect nothing, be ready for everything, and enjoy every living moment.”  Now, I feel I must clarify that he is not saying you should not have some sort of plan, some objective, something that motivates you to be better. It just means you cannot live with your head in the future, because you’ll miss the present. Instead of getting frustrated over what you do not have, enjoy what you do.

Lastly, mistakes are not a bad thing. The point of mistakes is that you learn from them and never make them again. This is how you grow into a more mature, well-rounded human being. One phrase that I have kept with me through this journey is: “ It does not matter that the whole world is against me. What matters is that my experience is valid.” We live through experiences and each experience has a lesson to teach us. It is up to us if we listen or just ignore it and stay comfortably yet miserably where we are. Yes it is difficult and scary to go out into the world not knowing what to expect but you just have to trust that you can handle any situation you are faced with. That trust in yourself is what is going to push you out into the world and help you feel more alive. I truly believe that because of this man, his books and his view on life I have become more resilient. I have been able to slowly break out of my shell and realize that there is nothing to fear. Life truly is a mystery and I don’t think anyone will ever have a detailed map of how you should go about it. But all I know is that for now, this is working for me. I am myself, and that is all I ever need to be.

Vitamin E, even though it sounds like a single nutrient, is actually a group of fat-soluble vitamins that work as strong antioxidants. This means they help protect your cells form the effects of free radicals. These free radicals are produced when your body breaks down food and are also found in the environment (tobacco smoke & radiation).  Scientists say that free radicals may contribute to the development of cardiovascular disease. Although there is no evidence that proves Vitamin E can reduce coronary heart disease, it is known that it improves the formation of red blood cells and helps widen blood vessels to avoid clots.

Benefits:

- Helps reduce menstrual pains
- Increases sperm count in men
- Reduces anxiety and depression
- Boosts immune system
- Promotes good blood circulation
- Improves physical endurance
- Increases energy

Skin Benefits

- Anti-aging: When added to lotions, creams and other skin care products, it can help skin look younger by reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

- Sun Protection: As mentioned before, when used in lotions it can protect the epidermis from early stages of UV light damage. Vitamin E can also increase the effectiveness of sunscreens. *Lotions must be applied 20 minutes before sun exposure for maximum benefits*

- Skin Diseases: Vitamin E can help treat conditions like psoriasis, erythema and vitiligo.

- Scars: Vitamin E does not have the same effect on all types of scars, but it has been shown that it helps reduce the appearance of stretch marks and some even say it can reduce the appearance of acne scars. It is also combined with vitamin A and D to treat diaper rashes.

Disadvantages

- Vitamin E may interact negatively with different medications. So if you are currently taking some sort of medication, consult your doctor before taking vitamin E supplements.

- When taken as a supplement be careful not to over-do it. Since vitamin E decreases blood clogging this can cause excess bleeding, especially if the person is already taking blood thinners.

Interesting Product #2: Nail Mat

Nail Mat For Relaxation?

Ok so I know that usually when people think of a relaxing evening they don’t think about  lying on a nail mat. But you would be surprised about how fantastic it actually is!

Nail mats have been used in Eastern spiritual and physical healing for hundreds of years but most recently this concept was given a new look, being turned into a more convenient portable mat. The traditional nails have been replaced with small lotus flower shaped disks with tiny plastic spikes that are attached to a padded yoga mat.
Now, the way this works is similar to acupuncture. The pressure you get from the spikes encourages your body to release endorphins (which suppresses pain and removes acid from the body, this helps with joint pain) and oxytocin (also known as the love hormone ;D) which makes you very relaxed.

The average nail mat has approximately 6,000 spikes but you can get mats that have 7,000 - 8,000 spikes. The higher the number of spikes the more comfortable it is but it also becomes less effective.

Benefits:

Relieves neck, back, muscle and joint pain
Helps with Insomnia
Relieves Headaches
Helps with Digestive problems
Helps with Cellulite
Reduces Inflammation
Eases Depression

There are various positions you can try while using this mat. Each position is useful in relieving a different symptom. You can lie face down, on your back, you can sit on the mat, and even stand on it. Try out different positions and see which one works the best for you.

Reccomended Use:

Start by lying on it for 5 minutes and then work your way up to 20. The first time it may feel uncomfortable but DO NOT give up, as you continue to use it this feeling will go away.
*For best results do not wear thick clothes while using the mat, it works best when your skin is touching the spikes.*

Price:

Prices can go from 20 to 60 dollars per mat. But don’t worry! If you search hard enough you can find more affordable mats out there. I got my mat for $7 at Marshalls (Super Deal!).

Interesting Product #1: Oolong Tea

Oolong tea has been used for many many years in China and Japan and even England for its various health benefits. This tea comes from the same plant as Green tea Camelia Sinensis but it is different because of the way it’s processed after harvesting. The name Oolong comes from Chinese meaning “Black Dragon” because of its long, dark and curly demeanor.

There are different types of Oolong tea, but the most popular ones are produced in the Wuyi Mountains of Northern Fujan  and in the central mountains of Taiwan. The flavor varies depending on how it was produced. You may find that some oolong teas have a sweet fruity taste while others  taste like an earthy black tea.

Benefits:

Helps burn fat
Reduces Stress
Reduces Bad Cholesterol
Aids in the relief of allergies
Helps fight cavities
Helps fight against signs of Aging (Dark spots, wrinkles, etc.)
Beneficial for Diabetes Patients
Reduces High Blood Pressure

The Caffeine content in oolong tea really depends on the type of leaves used and the preparation method. But Oolong Tea does have less caffeine than coffee or even black tea. Nonetheless you should not exceed your intake. Remember, too much of a good thing is bad. Start with one cup every day and see how you feel.  It is a delicious tea with many benefits so you should give it a try. * For best results steep for 3 to 4 minutes*
